I look forward to having an amazing year. ![]() Students will become experts in what these all mean and they are sure to be at the core of my program in Room/Team 28. I also like to teach “The Intellectuals” (Scholarly Behavior): Intellectual Humility, Leadership, Courage, and Aggressiveness. Students also know that they represent our “Team 28” when they are outside of the class and that now that they are 5th-graders, they will be seen as role models to younger students. Following the class rules, coming to school every day/on time, respecting everyone, showing kindness to one another, being organized with personal and class materials, doing clear and high-quality, neat work daily, these are all part of having the Order and Balance we need to succeed in school. I have very high expectations for my students and I feel that developing a sense of “Order and Balance” is crucial in order to succeed in fifth grade. Students enjoy showing off their work and other accomplishments to mom and dad on their cell phones. I hope you can set it up on your “favorites” task bar, or on your home-screen of your cell phone for easy access. ![]() Our website drives the culture in our class. I’ve found this to be a valuable tool for parents to stay up to date with the academic work that goes on in our class. I’d like all of you to review our class webpage and take a closer look at what we do in Room/Team 28. These activities are rich in building speaking confidence, creative/critical thinking, and are a source of great motivation for our students. Therefore, these will be embedded in many of the Integrated Curriculum lessons of the day, particularly during the arts, more specifically, Drama Club, or DC14, and Reader’s Theatre. Speaking, listening, and debating are also important skills needed to succeed this year. In addition, 5th Grade requires students to fulfill high Physical Education standards as well as taking the Fitnessgram Exam, but we will work progressively to build both, conditioning as well as necessary skills. The arts, (drawing, painting, music, and theatre) will also be embedded in all that what we do, as they enable our students to creatively express and present their findings and team projects to the class. iPads and Smart Devices, are all used as part of our daily instruction and class discussions. My students learn to integrate and evaluate all information that is presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. Room/Team 28 is also a creative and technology-driven class. That is to say, we take all subjects, (language arts, math, science, social studies, health, art, music, theater, & physical education), and deepen our knowledge by way of critical analysis and careful exploration of the subject matter. We are made up of six Academic Teams and spend much of our day, constructing meaning in groups through depth and complexity of all subjects. They do this through teamwork and class discussions. Students build on others’ ideas and learn to express their own clearly and persuasively. ![]() College and Career readiness is learning to prepare for and participating effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners.
